Hi,
The car accelerates, the needle passes 100km/h ...120 km/h... the speed is still increasing. The Millecento urges on.
The standard max speed is passed and and the car buzzes on like an Abarth 207A, and in a blink, it reaches 160 km/h on the straight stretch.. Corner comes up, braking - controlled turning in, - it is handling like a GTI - nice.

Is it possible, is it safe ?

The questions flashes through my mind. How about having a little more fun with the Millecento!?

Club meetings, social gatherings, good friends, histories, food, drink and culture are for most, more than enough.
But how about prepping the cars for a track day out or a hill climb race on sundays. I expect that could be fun sport and prepping the car could also be technical fun and challenging.

Reading and translating from old Italian Magazines like Auto Italiana, one finds articles about how to "easily" prepare the Millecento for fast road driving. I would like to share some of that with you in the in the comming messages. I also hope there are somebody out there who can participate in the tread.

The knowledge from the 1950'ties may be buried with the experts of that days. We must try to revive the knowledge. It may still be there, but not accessible for us ordinary Fiat fans. May be this tread will be a contribution.
See you soon in the next message.

best regards
Nils Kr.

Hi Nils, that sounds great!

I would also suggest that you post any info or pics or links to the Australian Turbo124Fiat forum, where there is a Millecento subforum - see http://www.turbo124.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=26

Being in English it will make things easier and the Aussies are all into POWER... (preferably V8 power of course!)

Answer:

Great, lets expand the Millecento community, I will indeed include the Aussies.

May be the moderator (moderators) also could translate (a short version of) the messages to and from the Italian/English forum. That is, if the moderators think there is a general interst for messages at one of the forums, and that they could post the content on the foreign speaking forum.

Or, the autor of the message, like me, could also use Google translator to post in foreign language. Though Google Italian is not always understandable.

My thought on this is more like - how to get the Italian experts, the community, to share their expertice in regard to the Fiat Millecento with us, the english speaking world. That would be very welcome !

Hi Nils, I will do my best to translate anything (not too difficult/technical) from English into Italian and viceversa.

I have raised the issue of extra performance and tuning on this forum before, but my understanding (although I am happy to be corrected) is that the Italian members are more interested in originality in order to get authenticity certification etc, rather than in modifications. There may also be issues of legal road usage in Italy after modification, involving costs, which would be a disincentive. Nonetheless there should hopefully be documentation somewhere re race preparation in years gone by (including eg Stanguellini).

Also, it has been shown in some past posts that well tuned original vehicles can perform amazingly well. There's a Youtube video here somewhere showing an early 1100 overtaking everything on the autostrada near Naples after being rebuilt with original parts by a local Porsche-oriented workshop!

Personally, I am torn between the two schools of thought. I just got my 1100 back on Friday from a local workshop specialising in race preparation/motorsport, and the guys there were all over it and really enjoyed driving it. I raised the issue with them of doing some modifications, but they said they thought it was great the way it is - maybe just with some upgraded tyres and shocks, but left mechanically pretty standard.

I realise that this may not be of much help to you, but I think it is just as much an issue of culture (and money!) as of mechanics. For those of us who grew up in Italy in the '60s (myself included), the 1100 was a well loved family car, not a performance machine, and this is reflected to some extent in the feelings and attitudes of those on the forum here. It is memory lane type stuff, as opposed to performance figures.

All the best, John.
