Re: Pics of NickNZ's 1100 (ultimo messaggio anche in italiano)
Thanks for posting John.
A little about the car: Its registered as a 1956, and first went on the road in NZ in 1960. I've only had it a couple of months and am starting to fix it up to get it back on the road (has been off the road since about 2000). Its in reasonably sound condition with mainly only minor rust apart from the floor/cross-members behind the front wheelarches where there is severe rusting underneath previous bad repairs. The front cross-member of the subframe was badly corroded so i have removed and cut away the bad section ready for replacement. I'll add some pics as the restoration progresses.
The plan is to strip out and repair the body and re-paint the whole thing. The interior is in quite good condition so won't be replaced at this stage. The engine is quite tired and smoky so i'm undecided what to do there. I hope i don't get shot down in flames by the purists here
but i'm considering fitting a Fiat 124 motor that i have in preference to rebuilding. Its the 1438cc pushrod version and is quite similar in appearance to the original, so shouldn't look too out of place under the bonnet.
cheers
Nick

Thanks Nick, very interesting. Do you know what the story was between 1956 and 1960, ie do you know if it was registered overseas first and where...? Any indication of where it was assembled - some were assembled in Australia (but I'm unsure of the exact dates) and of course some were built in South Africa...
I don't think anyone on the Forum will die at the thought of a 124 engine being dropped in, but I get the feeling that Italian regulations can be rather a pain... I'll ask in a separate post in Italian if anyone has experience of fitting later engines...
All the best, John.
PS I'm hoping that Alan Pickering, President of the Fiat Club South Australia will also join the Forum as he acquired an 1100 a few months ago as well... nicknamed Millie (same name as my 1100... they are probably all called that for obvious reasons!)

Re: Pics of NickNZ's 1100 (ultimo messaggio anche in italiano)
I'm not sure of the car's history pre 1960 and the government computer just spits back 'unknown' with regard to country of origin. There is quite a pile of papers with the vehicle, but unfortunately nothing to state where it came from.
Interestingly the odometer was round the clock by the mid sixties and there are receipts for a rebuild with new pistons etc by the dealer who was selling it at that time. There is an original operation/instruction manual with it and this is in English so perhaps that is a clue. It is right hand drive and the speedo units are metric so that may point to where it could have come from too. There is so sign of any "assembled by..." type plate only the Fiat auto one.

Speedo units in metric...?? Very interesting. I would have thought all RHD vehicles would have been in miles in those days.. even fairly recent RHD Fiats were often in miles even when exported to km countries...! I wonder if a replacement speedo was fitted at some stage...

Re: Pics of NickNZ's 1100 (ultimo messaggio anche in italiano)
Yes, i was a little surprised at that. It has the same 130km/ora speedo as i have seen in some of the pictures of the same model italian 1100s on this site. I recall there being a couple of receipts for speedo repairs at different times so it is not improbable that it isn't original. It certainly would have been unusual if fitted in pre-metric days.

Hi Nick, any idea when you might be getting those parts cars from Timaru? I understand that there are other "nice" vehicles inside a shed... could be good to have a look. If you're going down sometime, I wouldn't mind tagging along if I was free... possibly even in the 1100. Let me know. All the best, John.

Hi John,
That would be good. I'm waiting to hear when is a good time to go get them. Its supposed to happen one weekend before xmas.
I'll keep you posted. I'm looking forward to seeing them. Two are 1100Ds and the other is an 1100 special i think so it will give me a few more engine options

Ideal, thanks Nick... You wouldn't know of any Fiat 1800/2100/2300 saloons/wagons anywhere would you... not that I would want to buy one (at the moment!)... am just interested. I remember seeing one at a classic car thing in Wellington about 15 years ago but that's it... I've dropped a line to Mike Dodge in case he knows of any. Am told that there are a few 2300s around, but goodness knows what shape they're in. By all accounts body/trim parts are hard to find so they've probably been allowed to deteriorate. All the best, John.

I recall there being a couple in Duncan Rutherford's extensive collection in Nelson but it has been broken up i believe. I think a couple of those sold on trademe a year or two back. I've never heard of any others. The only 2300 i have seen in recent times was a coupe. Beautiful cars!!

Nick's 1100s (Messaggio anche in italiano, con foto)
Hi Nick
Great to catch up today and bit of a treat seeing all your uncle's cars out there. Also loved your 124 with Croma Turbo engine. Here are the pics I took... came out ok...

Ciao, John.
